Fungi synthetic biology / Biología sintética de hongos

Available in:

English, Spanish

Recommended age:

15+

Speaker:

Carolina Ropero Perez

Description:

Molds, also known as filamentous fungi, hide a vast capacity to produce high-value products and substitute current chemical reactions, full of pollutants, to more sustainable ways of production. The use of molds goes from the classical fermentation of beverages and foods to the bioproduction of pigments, antimicrobials, vitamins and other molecules with application for medicine, food or textil industry, among others. But that's not all: we use can go even further thanks to the novel synthetic biology tools that allow researches to modify fungi genes as "lego" pieces to create efficient and sustainable "biofactories". Do you want to know more about filamentous fungi and synthetic biology? Ask for a talk!

The Rules of Growth: Living Beings, Cities and Companies

Available in:

English, Italian

Recommended age:

16+

Speaker:

Margarita Ifti

Description:

In this webinar, we will discuss the physics of scale in nature, human society (cities) and business, in order to explore how seemingly different systems can respond to somewhat similar rules for growing.

What is a virus?

Available in:

English, Russian

Recommended age:

8+

Speaker:

Andrei Deviatkin

Description:

Viruses are tiny biological entities that use cellular forms of life for reproduction. Today there are approximately 7000 recognised viral species. However, this seems to be the tip of the iceberg - the real diversity of viruses appears to be much more profound. Currently, approximately 200 known viruses may infect humans. Around 20 of them (e.g., HIV, SARS-CoV-2) pose a significant threat to humankind. Simultaneously, we were highly connected with viruses during our evolution. For example, some human genes were derived from viruses. And nowdays, scientists are using viruses to develop effective strategies for treating several diseases. Some viruses were successfully used as a vector for a vaccine against COVID-19.

From Farm to Fork... or Bin?

Available in:

English

Recommended age:

12+

Speaker:

Kar Yeen Chong

Description:

About a third of all the food produced never reaches a human stomach. In this webinar, we will explore food waste and what we can do to minimize them. We will also dive deeper on how my scientific research intertwines in this aspect. I'd love to interact with students, therefore it would likely be a 20-30 min talk followed by a Q&A session. The webinar can be tailored according to students' interests.

Life at the bottom of the ocean: the discovery of life without sunlight

Available in:

English, French

Recommended age:

12+

Speaker:

Ulysse Pedreira Segade

Description:

In the late 1970s, ocean scientists and geologists discovered strange geological features, lying at the bottom of the seas. There, these scientists were shocked to encounter life! In the complete darkness, at extreme pressures and temperatures, life is thriving. We will explore the peculiar geology of these places and understand how these life oases can inform us of the possibilities of life on other planets.

What animal behavior can teach us about the human brain

Available in:

English, Greek

Recommended age:

16+

Speaker:

Aikaterini Britzolaki

Description:

This webinar will explain how scientists use animal behavior to understand the human brain and the mechanisms underlying brain disease. A Q&A session will be available at the end of the webinar.

What is biotechnology?

Available in:

English, Spanish

Recommended age:

12+

Speaker:

Camila Acosta Lopez

Description:

In this webinar I'll try to explain what is biotechnology and its main applications and areas, trying to note specially what products of biotechnology we use commonly and have been around for a long time and also which are the latest applications of biotechnology.

Agrobiodiversity: a key to building sustainable agriculture

Available in:

English, French

Recommended age:

8+

Speaker:

Adeline Barnaud

Description:

Is a fairer and more sustainable agriculture possible? An agriculture that meets the challenges of food security but also those of climate change and biodiversity erosion? Is agroecology really an option to feed the 9.8 billion people in 2050? This seminar presents the latest scientific findings on these issues and highlights the role of agrobiodiversity and family farming system in building a fair and equitable sustainable agriculture.

The origins of life meet microfluidics

Available in:

English, French, Portuguese

Recommended age:

12+

Speaker:

Camila Betterelli Giuliano

Description:

It is still not clear how life appeared on Earth billions of years ago. Microfluidics, new technology in handling liquids on the micro-scale, is helping scientists to find answers.

What are planaria?

Available in:

English, French

Recommended age:

6+

Speaker:

Caroline Vignet

Description:

Planaria are strange animal living very close to us and able to regenerate when you cut them. Do you believe me? In this webinar, I will explain what are planaria, where do they live, and what are all the possibilities with them for research.

What is DNA?

Available in:

English, Italian, Arabic

Recommended age:

8+

Speaker:

Samer Zaky

Description:

DNA is our manufacturing code or the language that spells us. What is it? How does it work; and make us work?

Are humans the only ones to develop cancer?

Available in:

English, Greek

Recommended age:

11+

Speaker:

Stefania Kapsetaki

Description:

In this webinar I will present the enormous collection of species where we see cancer. Do all species develop cancers? Some develop lots of cancers, others develop no cancers. Some cancers even transmit from one animal to the other as a contagious disease. We will talk about how diet, the environment, and chimerism, may affect cancer rates across species. Looking forward to a great discussion!
