Viruses are tiny biological entities that use cellular forms of life for reproduction. Today there are approximately 7000 recognised viral species. However, this seems to be the tip of the iceberg - the real diversity of viruses appears to be much more profound. Currently, approximately 200 known viruses may infect humans. Around 20 of them (e.g., HIV, SARS-CoV-2) pose a significant threat to humankind. Simultaneously, we were highly connected with viruses during our evolution. For example, some human genes were derived from viruses. And nowdays, scientists are using viruses to develop effective strategies for treating several diseases. Some viruses were successfully used as a vector for a vaccine against COVID-19.
