Viruses are tiny biological entities that use cellular forms of life for reproduction. Today there are approximately 7000 recognised viral species. However, this seems to be the tip of the iceberg - the real diversity of viruses appears to be much more profound. Currently, approximately 200 known viruses may infect humans. Around 20 of them (e.g., HIV, SARS-CoV-2) pose a significant threat to humankind. Simultaneously, we were highly connected with viruses during our evolution. For example, some human genes were derived from viruses. And nowdays, scientists are using viruses to develop effective strategies for treating several diseases. Some viruses were successfully used as a vector for a vaccine against COVID-19.

The Swiss public association, AGiR! (Action for Genomic integrity through Research!) was founded more than 7 years ago in order to raise awareness about avoidable risks to health. 'Genomic integrity' is a big-picture concept meant to include all the dynamic molecular genetic details of cells. Damage to these cellular components can block their vital activities, and can result from many things we are regularly exposed to (UV, heavy metals, pesticides) or commonly choose to do (smoking, hair dyeing, drinking alcohol). Research shows how sub-cellular damage can affect health and/or speed up ageing. Luckily, we have about 100 genes to repair such damage and take care of the 20,000 genes in our cells; but prevention is better than a cure. Learn about your cells, how RNA activities can be essential for DNA repair, and furthermore about how this is also a global environmental issue. In this Zoom meeting, we will discover the magnitude of potential impacts and explore simple ways to reduce exposure to substances causing cellular damage and thus help promote healthy ageing. You will learn about 'participatory research' and 'biohacking' at Lausanne's open public laboratory, Hackuarium, where one day you may like to come participate in a guided exploration of your own cellular health. (Presentation can be adapted for audiences of any age, 9-90, and can include, potentially, an oFoldscope build...)
